In the early 1960s, the Jayer-Gilles estate acquired half a hectare in this fabled grand cru from the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. The Pinot Noir vines planted back then yield a wine of eye-popping stoniness and length whose fearsome terroir imprint all but buries the 50% new wood Alexandre employs for its élevage. This spends 20 months in barrel before being bottled without fining or filtration.
Burghound Review:
A markedly spicy wide-ranging nose combines notes of red cherry, raspberry, plum liqueur and hints of Asian-style tea. The supple and round middle weight flavors aren't especially dense though they do possess a seductive texture before culminating in a lightly stony, long and powerful finale where a touch of warmth gradually emerges. While this is certainly very good, it's perhaps not quite at its usual very high level. Drink: 2030+
