Please Note: This is a wine from The Jura region of France. Traditionally they may be aged oxidatively and be somewhat funky. It is an intentional style not a wine flaw.
This cuvée is the classic white wine of Montbourgeau. It is usually bottled after 24 to 30 months of élevage in barrel. Chardonnay is the dominant grape but an occasional Savagnin vine is found within the Chardonnay plantings, an addition which adds a touch of complexity to the ultimate blend. The fermentation occurs in stainless steel but, after malolactic, the wine is racked into small barrel and demi-muids for two years. At that point, the entire production is assembled and left for several months in cuve before being bottled.
Wine Advocate Review:
The first white sous voile is the 2020 L'Etoile, 100% Chardonnay from different plots from a vintage with good concentration and complexity after the wine matured for almost three years, 18 months of which was spent under a veil of yeasts that gave it that distinct Jura twang. Time concentrated everything and alcohol too, to 14%. 6,390 bottles and 70 magnums were filled in April 2023. Anticipated Maturity: 2024-2029
