The template for Saint Georges has not deviated significantly over the past several years. The Besson Family’s two ranches on decomposed granite and clay off the inland slope of the southern end of the Santa Cruz Mountains contribute the majority of the fruit here, as usual. These plantings date to 1969, and were grafted over to pinot noir cuttings given them by Josh Jensen in the 80s. Though not particularly altitudinous, the sites contribute an undeniable cool, alpine quality here, an effect augmented by the cool temperatures and slow, prolonged ripening arc of 2023. One might suspect a band of itinerant botanicals foragers camped for the night at the cellar, leaving behind a trail of vaporous tinctures in their wake. To their register of expansive red floral notes, we add approximately 20% of more muscular, brooding, deeply-flavored old selections of pinot from two vineyards planted by Dick Graff in the late 60s and early 80s nearly 1700’ up in the Chalone AVA , and just over the Gabilan Mountains in remote Lime Kiln Valley. These vineyards, all on a rare mix of limestone, dolomite and granite, together bring finely textured depth and lifted aromatics. We handpicked everything, often at night, and included about a third stems. After several days, fermentation commenced without inoculation. We pressed off after fairly short 10-14 day macerations, and after final barrel selections were made, racked just once prior to bottling without filtration in July of 2024.
