Incredibly refreshing but serious at the same time. It opens beautifully in the glass after a few swirls and add it rewards with flinty and citrus zest notes, accompanied by a smoky character. The lean, super fresh acidity is merged harmoniously with a creamy body showing elegant biscuit undertones.
Around 5,000 years ago, the Minoans settled the Southern Aegean, including the island of Thira (Santorini). Today, in Crete, farmers are cultivating the ancient variety Assyrtiko which originated from the island of Santorini. The Alexakis brothers source these grapes from high-elevation vineyards where ancient winepresses have survived since the Bronze Age. The wine is tank-fermented and aged sur lie for three months.
Wine Advocate Review:
In a screw-cap bottle, the Alexakis 2023 Assyrtiko is a terrific white wine from Crete made near the ancient city of Knossos and its Bronze Age archeological site. The fruit is amply layered with marine salt and minerals, giving the wine a very angular and crisp personality. There are aromas of lemon, pear and star fruit over a lean, fresh close. I could imagine a pairing with a grilled fish dish with herbs and olive oil. Anticipated Maturity: 2024-2026
