Deep ruby red, suggestive nose of plums and berries and with a hint of licorice; a fine wine with a complex bouquet, medium body, fresh and long finish. Excellently suited to all variations of fish and different appetizers.
50% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot. Aged for 14 months n new (10%) and used Barrique and Tonneaux barrels made out of finest French oak, a few months in concrete to blend the different varieties.
The name of our most successful wine Ad Astra is gleaned from the Latin phrase Per Aspera Ad Astra — “a rough road leads to the stars”. A phrase that is also true for great wines, as greatness requires a great deal of loving work and care in the vineyards. Ad Astra grows in our property in Maremma called Mongibello delle Mandorlaie between Scansano and Magliano in Toscana, 8 km away from the sea at an altitude of 250m. The vineyards lie in the Morellino di Scansano DOCG area. All vineyards are certified organic.
Rich, red- and dark-fruited character with notes of spiced cedar, dried citrus peel and walnuts. Medium- to full-bodied, racy and tense, with firm, tight tannins that have a fine texture but need a little more time to integrate better. Shows good energy and is nicely filled with fruit. Spiced and cedary at the end, but with a lot of freshness. Better after 2026.
The 2022 Ad Astra, Nittardi's Maremma wine, is terrific. It offers up copious blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and chocolate. Pretty floral notes reappear on the finish to add brightness. This sumptuous Sangiovese/Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc blend will drink well on release.
