Lemons grown on the hillsides of the Amalfi Coast were granted I.G.P. (protected geographic indication) status, a designation approved in 1992 under the adoption of the European Union, which applies to agricultural produce of exceptionally high reputation and distinction related to its geographical origin. The cultivating, harvesting and distribution procedures of the I.G.P.
Costa d'Amalfi Lemon are strictly controlled. The organic lemon growers do not use chemical insecticides or aggressive growing techniques in order to insure a contaminate-free product. The lemons are selected, picked by hand and carried down the hillsides without utilizing any machines.
