The Prunier cognac house dates back to 1665, when Jean Prunier, a famous cognac expert from the La Rochelle region, started producing wine and eau-de-vie. He began shipping his products around the world in the early 1700s, and Prunier cognac was born. His son, Gabriel Prunier, took over the business after Jean's death in 1732, followed by his grandson, also called Jean Prunier. Another member of the family, François Prunier, acquired vineyards in the Cognac district around St-Jean-d'Angély. It was he and another Jean Prunier who finalized the move of businesses to the town of Cognac itself in the early 1800s. This third Jean Prunier had three sons, Alphonse, Marcel and Gaston, who of course followed the family tradition.
Alphonse takes over the company, Marcel works in Europe as a representative of the company and Gaston settles in Australia where he creates an antipodal branch of Cognac Prunier in Melbourne. When Alphonse died in 1918, he left no direct descendants. His widow therefore called on his nephew, Jean Burnez, to take over the management of the company.
