100% Pinot Blanc vinified dry. A selection of older vines (40-50 years old) planted in limestone soils mostly from the Steinacker and some from Saumagen. A "salt-and-pepper" kind of wine, that is, saline in its minerality with a spicy fruit character. Mineral-driven and creamy with a touch of acidity lifting the finish.
This historic estate, managed by the legendary and larger than life Bernd Philippi for the last decades and now with the assistance of cellarmaster Dominik Sona, is undoubtedly one of the top estates in the Pfalz. Known for their broad, rich and minerally rieslings, pinot blancs and chardonnays sourced from the two top locations in Kallstadt—-the Steinacker and Saumagen vineyards—-these are distinctive and profound wines. The wines are fermented on their own yeasts, mostly in large (1200 liter) neutral stück casks and aged in large old oak barrels when quantities permit and smaller barrels for small production cuvées. These are old style wines from an estate making trocken wines before it was trendy - the wines age well and are really best after a few years.
